Cantilever
Also called cantilevers, cantilevered
A beam, slab or truss supported at one end only, projecting beyond its support and held by the moment at the fixed end.
Rules that use the word
The hidden roof: separate the eaves from the weather. Build the visible eaves as low and wide as the design requires, and above the visible ceiling raise a second, steeper roof on cantilever beams (hanegi) to shed the rain.
Destroy the box. Open the corners, extend the roofs and terraces beyond the walls with cantilevers, and let the space of the house flow outward rather than being enclosed in rooms like boxes.
Where it appears in the book
In the chapters The Arch, The Roof, Frame and Skin, The Contemporary, The Americas.
A feature of Deconstructivism architecture.
