Mingjian
The central bay of a Chinese hall, on the axis, containing the main doors; it is the widest bay, the others diminishing toward the ends.

Rules that use the word
The central bay is the widest; columns no taller than a bay is wide. Make the central bay (mingjian) the widest and let the bays diminish toward the ends; keep the eave columns no taller than the width of their bay.
