Glossary · P
Primitive hut
Also called rustic hut
The imagined first shelter of mankind (in Laugier’s version four trees, beams and a pitched roof), used as a model to judge which parts of architecture are essential.
Rules that use the word
The primitive hut. Judge every building against the first shelter: four trees for columns, branches laid across them for the entablature, and a pitched roof whose end makes the pediment. These three are the essential parts; all else is added.
Where it appears in the book
In the chapters The Roof, Enlightenment and Revival, Reading the Treatises.
