Sarsen

Also called sarsens

A hard silcrete sandstone found as boulders on the chalk downs of southern England; the large stones of Stonehenge are sarsens.

Rules that use the word

Joints of carpentry worked in stone. At Stonehenge each lintel is pegged to its uprights by a mortise-and-tenon joint and locked to its neighbours by tongue-and-groove joints, and each is curved to follow the circle: the joints of a timber frame reproduced in dressed sarsen.

Where it appears in the book

In the chapters Post and Lintel.
