The kondō of Hōryū-ji
The golden hall of Hōryū-ji: a lower storey of 5 × 4 bays under a hipped skirt, an upper storey of 4 × 3 bays under a hip-and-gable roof, cloud brackets and entasis columns.
The rules it illustrates
Kiwari: size every member from the bay. Fix the bay (the distance between column centres) and derive every other member from it by fixed ratios: the column from the bay, the brackets and beams from the column, the rafters and their spacing from the brackets, the eaves from the rafters.
