The Unité d’habitation
After Le Corbusier’s housing slab at Marseille (1947–52): a vertical village of béton brut on pilotis, with loggias, an interior street of shops and a roof terrace.
The rules it illustrates
The vertical village. House a whole community in one tall slab: stack duplex flats that run through the block with light on both sides, put shops and services on an interior street half-way up, and give the roof to everyone.
Béton brut: concrete as found. Leave concrete as it comes from the formwork, marked by the grain of the boards and the joints of the shuttering, and let the structure be seen.
Where it appears in the book
In the styles Brutalism.
In the chapters The Modern Movement.
