The designs of Napoleon’s architects for the interiors and furniture of Malmaison, the Tuileries and Saint-Cloud: the Empire style of mahogany with gilt bronze mounts, beds under hung canopies, square-backed chairs, round tables on a central column, all drawn from Roman and Egyptian antiquity.
Charles Percier (1764–1838) and Pierre Fontaine (1762–1853) worked together from the 1790s; the Recueil appeared in parts from 1801 and complete in 1812. With the Jacob brothers, who made much of the furniture, they fixed the style of the Empire, and the book was followed across Europe.
