Plates of designs by Inigo Jones and William Kent, published by Vardy, who worked under Kent in the Office of Works: chimneypieces, ceilings, monuments and, among them, Kent’s furniture, his heavy gilt tables with marble tops on scrolls and masks, chairs, settees and pier glasses.
William Kent (c. 1685–1748) was the first English architect to design the furniture of his rooms as part of them. At Houghton, Holkham and Chiswick his tables, settees and chairs carry the architecture of the walls into the room, gilt, carved with shells, masks, eagles and acanthus, and covered to match the walls.
