The arch framed by an order
Arches on piers with engaged columns and a continuous entablature, the Roman combination codified by Vignola.
The rules it illustrates
The arch framed by an order. Set arches on piers and frame each bay with an engaged column or pilaster carrying a continuous entablature, so that the arch does the work and the order gives the measure.
The column is the chief ornament. In all architecture the principal ornament is the column: a part of the wall left standing and pierced through.
Where it appears in the book
In the chapters Columns in Company.
