An Art Nouveau façade
A town house in the manner of Horta’s Brussels houses (1893–1900): a bowed oriel of glass and iron, whiplash railings and a swelling cornice.
The rules it illustrates
Let the structure become the ornament. Instead of applying ornament to a structure, shape the structure itself, especially exposed iron, into lines that are both constructive and decorative.
Ornament is wasted labour. Omit applied ornament from buildings and everyday objects: it wastes work, money and material, dates quickly, and adds nothing that fine material and exact workmanship cannot give.
