The ideal city
Star-shaped Renaissance plans: Filarete’s Sforzinda (an eight-pointed star of two squares) and the nine-bastioned fortress town of Palmanova.
The rules it illustrates
The city as a star. Lay out the ideal city as a regular star inscribed in a circle (two squares turned 45° to one another), with gates in the re-entrant angles and towers at the points.
Radial streets from a central square. Run the principal streets straight from the central square to the gates, so that every gate is visible from the centre and every quarter lies on a direct route to it; set secondary squares along the radials.
The bastioned trace. Give a fortified town a polygonal wall with an angled bastion at every corner, so that each face of every bastion and every stretch of curtain wall can be swept by fire from its neighbours.
Where it appears in the book

In the chapters Renaissance and Baroque.
