Arthur Stratton · Preface, Foreword and Introduction
General Reference Books
As so large a proportion of the standard books in various European languages that have been consulted are rare and costly, no useful purpose would be served by enumerating them all here. In fact, this book claims to present many motives which are now well known, but the original sources of which are buried in ponderous volumes no longer accessible to the student and general reader. The list of standard works given at the end of the text to most of the Series have therefore been reduced to a working minimum, and they are intended to guide the student in his endeavours to supplement the elements of form and design illustrated, and in no way to indicate the field of research covered by the author.

Public-domain text (1925), transcribed from the archive.org OCR of the first edition and cleaned for reading: line-end hyphens rejoined, running heads, page numbers and the captions of the text figures removed, and obvious misreadings corrected. Stratton’s hundred plates are not reproduced, nor their engraved captions or the index to the illustrations; each Series is divided at his commentary on each plate, and the chapter titles follow the plate headings. The live figures are this book’s own.
