Plate LXII. Staircases with “Returned” Flights Planned within a Square
Plate LXII. — The diagrams on this Plate represent motives for square staircases with flights returned in each case. No. I shows the simplest type with short flights and quarter-space landings. No. II is larger in its dimensions, the flights being carried on walls and screened by columns which in turn support the covering over the well, in which a top-light is formed. In No. III the staircase is designed about an open well and is contained within a square, round which circulating corridors, screened by columns, complete the design. No. IV shows a staircase of three flights only, arranged about a central well, the fourth side of the square being taken up by the landing. No. V shows a staircase with returned flights arranged within an open square. The staircase shown in plan No. VI and perspective sketch No. VII consists of three flights placed against the sides of a square hall. It is partially screened by a colonnade upon which other columns are superimposed at the first floor level: this is an effective arrangement admitting of correct emphasis being given to the first floor approach.
Public-domain text (1925), transcribed from the archive.org OCR of the first edition and cleaned for reading: line-end hyphens rejoined, running heads, page numbers and the captions of the text figures removed, and obvious misreadings corrected. Stratton’s hundred plates are not reproduced, nor their engraved captions or the index to the illustrations; each Series is divided at his commentary on each plate, and the chapter titles follow the plate headings. The live figures are this book’s own.
