Arthur Stratton · Series IV. The Roman “D” or Tribune Plan, Semi-circular and Elliptical Plans

Plate XX. Roman “D” or Tribune Plans

Plate XX. — In No. I a simple “D” plan of small size is shown with columnar screen, and two methods of treating the elevation are given; in No. II the semi-dome is finished against a pediment which is a conspicuous feature of the design, and in No. III the curve of the semi-dome is expressed by a crowning segmental cornice: both are in accordance with Roman precedents. No. IV is an exedra of larger dimensions in which the curve of the dome is revealed to form a frontispiece, and further renderings of the same motive are given in Nos. V to VII. All these examples can be adapted for both internal and external treatments: they can be used for shelters in public parks and features in town furnishing; as open loggias for the display of sculpture and as incidents in the design of exhibition buildings.

Public-domain text (1925), transcribed from the archive.org OCR of the first edition and cleaned for reading: line-end hyphens rejoined, running heads, page numbers and the captions of the text figures removed, and obvious misreadings corrected. Stratton’s hundred plates are not reproduced, nor their engraved captions or the index to the illustrations; each Series is divided at his commentary on each plate, and the chapter titles follow the plate headings. The live figures are this book’s own.
