Arthur Stratton · Series V. Octagonal Plans
Plate XXIII. Small Octagonal Features
Plate XXIII. — The plan of an open octagonal shelter standing in an isolated position is shown in No. I, and alternative treatments of its covering are given in Nos. II and III. Excellent results can be obtained by such simple arrangements of elemental forms. A variety of types suitable for small isolated buildings such as lodges, garden and fishing-houses are shown in the other schemes outlined on this Plate, with coverings ranging from a concealed flat roof to a high eight-sided dome: all these were in constant use by eighteenth and early nineteenth century architects.
Public-domain text (1925), transcribed from the archive.org OCR of the first edition and cleaned for reading: line-end hyphens rejoined, running heads, page numbers and the captions of the text figures removed, and obvious misreadings corrected. Stratton’s hundred plates are not reproduced, nor their engraved captions or the index to the illustrations; each Series is divided at his commentary on each plate, and the chapter titles follow the plate headings. The live figures are this book’s own.
