An Arts and Crafts house
After the Red House (Philip Webb for William Morris, 1859): an L of plain red brick round a garden, steep tiled roofs, tall chimneys and windows set where the rooms need them.
The rules it illustrates
Positive outdoor space. Shape the space between buildings as carefully as the rooms: make outdoor spaces partly enclosed and convex, like outdoor rooms, rather than leftover gaps around freestanding objects.
Truth to materials. Show each material as what it is (brick as brick, timber as timber) and let the plan, rather than a symmetrical front, decide where the rooms, windows and chimneys go.
Where it appears in the book
In the styles Arts and Crafts.
In the chapters The Modern Movement.
