A ship of the 1600s
The merchant ship and the galleon of Claude Lorrain’s seaports: a deep hull with tumblehome, wales and gunports; a high stern of galleries, windows and gilt carving with three lanterns; a beakhead; three masts each with its top, topmast and yards, the mizzen with a lateen yard; the bowsprit; shrouds and stays; flags at the mastheads. Or the ship’s boat and the lighter that carried the goods ashore.
Where it appears in the book
