M. H. Baillie Scott · Houses Illustrated

Danestream

This house was designed for a site which slopes towards the north, and the floors of the rooms follow the natural slope of the ground. At the front door one enters a wide low passage which runs across the house to the garden-room, and beyond this is extended in the line of one of the garden vistas. On the south side of this passage are the two principal sitting-rooms—the drawing-room and study; while, on its north side and at a lower level following the slope of the ground are dining-room and kitchen premises. On the first floor are four bedrooms and bathroom, and in the attics, servants’ bedroom and boxroom. The cost of this house was £12 0. The plan of the garden includes an old gravel-pit developed as a rock garden.

Public-domain text (1906). Transcribed from the OCR of the Internet Archive’s scan of the Getty Research Institute’s copy (gri_33125001067863) and cleaned for reading: line-end hyphens rejoined, running heads, page numbers and captions removed, and misreadings corrected, among them the stray letters a crease in the scan scatters through the words of some pages. Baillie Scott’s colour plates, drawings, plans and photographs, and the lists of them, are not reproduced.
